Salalah's enduring appeal over the years has been
its natural benediction; the monsoon. Almost as if a
magic wand has been drawn over it, this area in the
Governorate of Dhofar mystically transforms itself. |

On
the mist laden Atteen Plain at the foot of the jebels, local
Omanis pitch tents converting it to a vast campsite. Here you
can experience genuine local hospitality at close quarters. |

Historical Treasures
The tomb of Prophet Ayoub
Natural beauty competes with historical treasures in this land
blessed by tradition. Visitors throng the tomb of Prophet Ayoub,
perched on the peak of one of the jebels on the Atteen range.
Hire a four wheel drive and make this exhilarating drive up a
steep winding mountain, past rolling hills carpeted with white
and purple flowers, criss -crossed by sparkling little
waterfalls. The tomb with its characteristic golden dome
attracts both the devout and the inquisitive. Close by are the
ruins of an ancient mosque.
The ancient city of Sumhuram
Overlooking the famous Khawr Rori creek are the ruins of the
ancient city of Sumhuram. Believed to have been the palace of
the Queen of Sheba, here are a few interesting plaques bearing
the ancient hieroglyphic script and a rectangular well.
The mausoleum of Mohammed bin Ali
Not far from Mirbat town is the 800-year-old mausoleum of
Mohammed bin Ali credited with the spread of Islam.

Mountain Springs
Ayn Jairiz is a favourite picnic spot. This natural woodland is
nurtured by a perennial mountain spring. Ayn Razat is another
popular picnickers' paradise. Located on the Mirbat Road here is
a collection of mountain springs that mysteriously surface and
flow though natural parkland and manicured lawns. The limestone
hillock nearby with its cave like opening is an ideal spot for a
late evening barbecue and campfire.
Wadi Cascades
On Salalah's eastern coast; take in Wadi Darbat, where there are
stunning views of gushing waterfalls and lush landscape. Close
by is the famous Khawr Rori creek, home to migratory birds like
the flamingoes and gulls.
